Local Greens support fresh Third Runway High Court challenge

20 October 2019

Activists from Hounslow Green Party joined other protestors outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London on the morning of Thursday 20 October 2019.

The protest marked fresh legal challenges against the proposed Third Runway.  Lawyers will argue for the first time that the rights of children were not taken into account by the government when it approved the Third Runway.

Tony Firkins

Tony Firkins, the Green Party prospective candidate for Feltham and Heston, who lives in Brentford, attended the protest and said  “We need to aim to be carbon neutral by 2030 and so we should be reducing flights, not increasing them.  I model the impact of policy changes on carbon emissions for the Green Party so I understand just how difficult it is to get anywhere near carbon neutral if we fly more.”

“I am also concerned about the extra noise, traffic and pollution in Hounslow from the Third Runway, and the damage to the residents’ mental and physical health this will cause.”

A coalition of local authorities including Wandsworth, Richmond upon Thames, Hillingdon, Hammersmith and Fulham, the mayor and Greenpeace, will argue the government’s decision to approve the expansion was flawed because ministers failed to properly consider the full impact on noise levels, health and the environment. Hounslow Council is not part of the legal challenge.

A decision is expected in December.
