Local Greens join march to campaign for peace in Iran

13 January 2020

Mariette Labelle, the Hounslow Green Party membership officer, joined Green Party members and other concerned citizens at the No War on Iran Demonstration on Saturday 11th January, 2020.  The event was organised by the Stop the War Coalition and CND to protest against the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, and to call for peace and de-escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Mariette, who is a representative for the Green Party on the steering committee of the Stop the War Coalition, said “the Green Party are right to condemn the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani as an affront to responsible diplomacy and a disproportionate and deliberately provocative act in a volatile region. Cutting through the bad arguments, distractions, and euphemisms we can see this extra judicial killing for what it is.”

“We call on the UK government to condemn the attack with the utmost urgency and at the highest level, and to counter President Trump’s reckless and dangerous foreign policy.”

“A responsible and ethical foreign policy would involve bringing an end to this violence through peaceful means, rather than escalating it and risking extreme further escalation.”

“It is critical that we see a de-escalation from both sides to allow proper diplomatic talks to take place and to seek resolution in line with international law.”
