Members of Hounslow Green Party joined MPs, HACAN members and other environment groups on Tuesday 9th November 2021 at Parliament Square, Westminster to mark the COP26 Transport Day on Wednesday 10th November 2021.  The protest highlighted the scale of the challenge that aviation faces to decarbonise and the unsustainable plans for expansion at Heathrow plus the impact of ‘greenwashing’.  COP26 Transport Day aims to “Drive the global transition to zero emission transport.”

Stephen Clark, the Green Party candidate for Brentford West in next year’s local elections, said “We are in a climate emergency and there is no current solution to the large, and growing, carbon emissions from aviation.  We must limit aviation growth and prevent Heathrow airport expansion as part of the plans to tackle climate change.”

“A third runway seems less likely for now.   But on 8th November 2021 British Airways and Virgin demonstrated the first synchronised dual take-off from Heathrow.  While this was a one-off, it suggests future expansion in flights with two runways, enabled by new technology - to the detriment of local communities as well as the climate.  During the pandemic Brentford residents enjoyed a welcome respite from the noise of low flying jets.  We will continue to fight for a permanent reduction in flights, particularly at night.”
