Greens make steady progress in local elections

The Green Party had great results in the local elections and are making good progress to their goal of winning a seat on Hounslow Council.  The strength of the green vote in Hounslow reflected a national trend.

Stephen Clark, who stood for the Green Party in Brentford West, came third behind the two winning Labour candidates, and ahead of the Conservatives and an independent.  His running mate, Tony Firkins, also did well.

Another highlight for the Greens on election night was Syon and Brentford Lock, where Anthony Agius came fourth behind the two Labour candidates and the former Labour candidate Theo Dennison, who ran as an independent.  Anthony finished ahead of both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.    There were also strong results for the Greens in Isleworth, Chiswick Riverside and Chiswick Homefields.

Stephen Clark said “Many thanks to all the people who voted Green.  On the doorsteps the voters told us they liked our plans to green Hounslow and listen to the electorate.”

“The unfair ‘first past the post’ system favours Labour and the Tories.   If a fairer system was used Hounslow Council would benefit from green voices in the Council Chamber.  The Council would be more representative, and its decision-making would be better.  This is not democracy!”
