Tony Firkins - candidate for Brentford West

Tony Firkins was our candidate in the Feltham and Heston constituency at the next general election.  Tony also stood in the 2015 and 2017 elections for the same seat.

Tony has lived in Brentford for over 30 years. Until recently he worked for a mobile phone network operator, specializing in the overall reliability of the service and the IT systems that make it all work. Tony now concentrates his time on the Green Party’s climate and energy policies.

His major environmental interest is in climate change and he has worked for some time with the Green Party to develop policies to help prevent catastrophic damage from global warming.  He instigated a petition to Hounslow Council earlier this year which lead to the declaration of a Climate Emergency in the borough.  He argues vociferously for new developments in the borough and across the UK to be genuinely zero carbon.

He believes in the maxim of "Think global, act local" which has led him to be active in local campaigns against Heathrow expansion and addressing air pollution in the context of the country’s and the world’s ecology.  “The Greens’ opposition to the expansion of Heathrow has never been more relevant”, Tony says “we are the only consistent opponent to this outrageous scheme”.

As a keen cyclist and walker, he wishes to see a much greener Feltham and Heston less dominated by the car.

Tony said: “The Green Party isn’t just another political party. Green politics is about ensuring we continue to have a habitable world for humankind to live in.

In making decisions about the transport we use daily, the housing we live in, the stuff we buy and the food we eat, we need to consider the natural world.

Greenhouse gases and other pollution are a real threat to our way of life. But addressing them is also an opportunity to move towards a healthier, cleaner, peaceful, fairer, sustainable and more beautiful place to live, work and play.”

“We have no illusions about forming a Green Government, at least not yet,” Tony says. “But with more Green Party MPs in parliament to hold the government to account, we can apply huge pressure. Caroline Lucas is massively influential. Can you imagine if there are more of us?”
